Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VII, 62

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let g\mathfrak{g} be a Lie algebra, h\mathfrak{h} a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g} and UgU\mathfrak{g} (resp. UhU\mathfrak{h}) the enveloping algebra of g\mathfrak{g} (resp. h\mathfrak{h}). A linear form φ\varphi on UgU\mathfrak{g} is said to be central if it vanishes on [Ug,Ug][U\mathfrak{g},U\mathfrak{g}], i.e. if φ(a.b)=φ(b.a)\varphi (a.b) =\varphi (b.a) for all a,b∈Uga, b\in U\mathfrak{g}.

a) Let x,y∈gx, y\in \mathfrak{g}. Assume that there exists s∈s\in Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}) such that s(x)=ys(x) =y. Show that

φ(xn)=φ(yn) \varphi (x^n) =\varphi (y^n)

for all n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N} and for every central linear form φ\varphi on UgU\mathfrak{g}.

b) Let φ\varphi be a central linear form on UgU\mathfrak{g} whose restriction to UhU\mathfrak{h} vanishes. Show that φ=0\varphi = 0. (We can assume that kk is algebraically closed. Deduce from aa) that we then have φ(xn)=0\varphi (x^n) = 0 for all n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N} and all regular x∈gx\in \mathfrak{g}; use a density argument to remove the assumption of regularity.)

c) Show that Ug=[Ug,Ug]+UhU\mathfrak{g}= [U\mathfrak{g},U\mathfrak{g}] + U\mathfrak{h}.

d) Let V be a semi-simple g\mathfrak{g}-module. Show that V is semi-simple as an h\mathfrak{h}-module. In particular, Vλ(h)=Vλ(h)V^{\lambda}(\mathfrak{h}) = V_{\lambda}(\mathfrak{h}) for all λ∈h∗\lambda \in \mathfrak{h}^*.

e) Let V′V' be a semi-simple g\mathfrak{g}-module. Assume that V and V′V' are isomorphic as h\mathfrak{h}-modules. Show that they are isomorphic as g\mathfrak{g}-modules. (If a∈Uha\in U\mathfrak{h}, remark that Tr(aVa_V) == Tr(aV′a_{V'}). Deduce, by using bb) or c), that Tr(xVx_V) == Tr(xV′x_{V'}) for all x∈Ugx\in U\mathfrak{g}, and conclude by using Algebra, Chap. VIII.)

If kk is algebraically closed, the assumption that“VandV′' are h\mathfrak{h}-isomorphic” is equivalent to saying that dim Vλ(h)=V_{\lambda}(\mathfrak{h}) = dim Vλ′(h)V'_{\lambda}(\mathfrak{h}) for all λ∈h∗\lambda \in \mathfrak{h}^*.
