Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VII, 58

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let g\mathfrak{g} be a Lie algebra, h\mathfrak{h} a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g} and xx an element of h\mathfrak{h}. Let g=h⊕g+\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{h}\oplus \mathfrak{g}^+ be the Fitting decomposition (§1, no. 1) of g\mathfrak{g} with respect to h\mathfrak{h}. a) Let n\mathfrak{n} be the largest semi-simple h\mathfrak{h}-submodule contained in g0(x)∩g+\mathfrak{g}^0(x)\cap \mathfrak{g}^+. Show that n=0\mathfrak{n}= 0 if and only if g0(x)=h\mathfrak{g}^0(x) =\mathfrak{h}, i.e. xx is regular in g\mathfrak{g}.

b) Show that h⊕n\mathfrak{h}\oplus \mathfrak{n} is a subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}. If h′\mathfrak{h}' is the intersection of h\mathfrak{h} with the commutant of n\mathfrak{n}, show that h′\mathfrak{h}' is an ideal of h⊕n\mathfrak{h}\oplus \mathfrak{n} which contains Dh\mathscr{D}\mathfrak{h} and xx. Conclude (Exerc. 8) that h′⊂C∞(h⊕n)\mathfrak{h}'\subset \mathscr{C}_{\infty}(\mathfrak{h}\oplus \mathfrak{n}), and hence that x∈C∞(h⊕n)x\in \mathscr{C}_{\infty}(\mathfrak{h}\oplus \mathfrak{n}) and that xx belongs to every Cartan subalgebra of h⊕n\mathfrak{h}\oplus \mathfrak{n}.

c) If n≠0,h⊕n\mathfrak{n}\not= 0,\mathfrak{h}\oplus \mathfrak{n} is not nilpotent and has infinitely-many Cartan subalgebras (§2, Exerc. 10). Conclude that xx belongs to infinitely-many Cartan subalgebras of g\mathfrak{g}.

d) An element of g\mathfrak{g} is regular if and only if it belongs to a unique Cartan subalgebra.
