Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VII, 63

Take G=GLn(k),n≥0G =\mathbf{G}\mathbf{L}_n(k),n\geq 0.

a) Show that rAd0(g)=nr_{Ad}^0(g) =n for all g∈Gg\in G.

b) Show that an element g∈Gg\in G is regular if and only if its characteristic polynomial Pg(T)=P_g(T) = det(T−g-g) is separable; this is equivalent to saying that the discriminant (Algebra, Chap. IV, §1, no. 10) of Pg(T)P_g(T) is ≠0\not= 0.
