Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Assume that k=Ck=\mathbf{C}. Put C=H2+2H−4X−X+C =H^2+ 2H-4X_-X_+, cf. Exerc. 1. A representation ρ\rho of s=sl(2,C)\mathfrak{s}=\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2,\mathbf{C}) is said to be HH-diagonalizable if the underlying space of ρ\rho has a basis consisting of eigenvectors of ρ(H)\rho (H). Let q∈Cq\in \mathbf{C} and v∈Q/Zv\in \mathbf{Q}/\mathbf{Z}.

a) Let S be a vector space with a basis (ew)w∈C(e_w)_{w\in\mathbf{C}} indexed by the elements of C\mathbf{C}. Let Sv=∑w∈vCewS_v=\sum_{w\in v}\mathbf{C}e_w. There exists a unique representation ρv,q\rho_{v,q} of s\mathfrak{s} on SvS_v such that

7^7 The conclusion remains true even if kk is countable, cf. D. QUILLEN, On the

endomorphism ring of a simple module over an enveloping algebra, Proc. Amer.

Math. Soc., Vol. XXI (1969), pp. 171-172.

ρv,q(X+)ew=(q−w2−w)1/2ew+1 \rho_{v,q}(X_+)e_w= (q-w^2-w)^{1/2}e_{w+1}
ρv,q(X−)ew=(q−w2+w)1/2ew−1 \rho_{v,q}(X_-)e_w= (q-w^2+w)^{1/2}e_{w-1}
ρv,q(H)ew=2wew \rho_{v,q}(H)e_w= 2we_w

(We agree that, for all z∈C,z1/2z\in \mathbf{C},z^{1/2} is the square root of zz whose amplitude belongs to 0,π.0, \pi .) Denote by Sv,qS_{v,q} the s\mathfrak{s}-module defined by ρv,q\rho_{v,q}. We have ρv,q(C)=4q\rho_{v,q}(C) = 4q.

b) If q≠u2+uq\not=u^2+u for all u∈v,Sv,qu\in v, S_{v,q} is simple.

c) Assume that 2v≠02v\not= 0, and that qq is of the form u2+uu^2+u, where u∈v,u≥0u\in v, u\geq 0 (which defines uu uniquely). Let Sv,q−S^-_{v,q} (resp. Sv,q+S^+_{v,q}) be the vector subspace of SvS_v generated by the ewe_w for w≤uw\leq u (resp. w>uw > u). Then Sv,q−S^-_{v,q} and Sv,q+S^+_{v,q} are simple s\mathfrak{s}-submodules of Sv,qS_{v,q}.

d) Assume that 2v=02v= 0, and that qq is of the form u2+uu^2+u, where u∈v,u≥0u\in v, u\geq 0 (which defines uu uniquely). Let Sv,q−S^-_{v,q} (resp. Sv,q0,Sv,q+S^0_{v,q},S^+_{v,q}) be the vector subspace of SvS_v generated by the ewe_w for w<−uw <-u (resp. −u≤w≤u,w>u-u\leq w\leq u, w > u). Then Sv,q−,Sv,q0S^-_{v,q},S^0_{v,q} and Sv,q+S^+_{v,q} are simple s\mathfrak{s}-submodules of Sv,qS_{v,q}.

e) Assume that v=−12+Zv=-\frac{1}{2}+\mathbf{Z} and q=−14q=-\frac{1}{4}. Let S−1/2,−1/4−S^-_{-1/2,-1/4} (resp. S−1/2,−1/4+S^+_{-1/2,-1/4}) be the vector subspace of S−1/2S_{-1/2} generated by the ewe_w for w≤−12w\leq -\frac{1}{2} (resp. w>−12w >-\frac{1}{2}). Then S−1/2,−1/4−S^-_{-1/2,-1/4} and S−1/2,−1/4+S^+_{-1/2,-1/4} are simple s\mathfrak{s}-submodules of S−1/2,−1/4S_{-1/2,-1/4}.

f) Denote by ρv,q±,ρv,q0\rho^{\pm}_{v,q}, \rho^0_{v,q} the representations corresponding to Sv,q±,Sv,q0S^{\pm}_{v,q},S^0_{v,q}. In case b), the elements x∈sx\in \mathfrak{s} such that ρv,q−(x)\rho^-_{v,q}(x) admits an eigenvalue are those in CH\mathbf{C}H. In cases c),d),e)c),d),e), the elements x∈sx\in \mathfrak{s} such that ρv,q−(x)\rho^-_{v,q}(x) admits an eigenvalue are those in CH+CX+\mathbf{C}H+\mathbf{C}X_+; if, in addition, xx is nilpotent (and hence proportional to X+X_+) and non-zero, ρv,q−(x)\rho^-_{v,q}(x) admits 0 as its only eigenvalue, and this of multiplicity 1; on the other hand, if xx is semi-simple, the underlying space of ρv,q−\rho^-_{v,q} has a basis consisting of eigenvectors of ρv,q−(x)\rho^-_{v,q}(x). There are analogous results for ρv,q+\rho^+_{v,q}, replacing X+X_+ by X−X_-.

g) Let V be a simple s\mathfrak{s}-module and ρ\rho the corresponding representation. Then ρ(C)\rho (C) is a homothety (use Exerc. 11). Assume that ρ(C)=4q\rho (C) = 4q. Show that, if ρ\rho is HH-diagonalizable, V is isomorphic to one of the modules Sv,q,Sv,q±,Sv,q0S_{v,q},S^{\pm}_{v,q},S^0_{v,q} considered in b),c),d),e)b),c),d),e). Moreover, ρ\rho is HH-diagonalizable if and only if ρ(H)\rho (H) admits an eigenvalue; it suffices that ρ(X+)\rho (X_+) admits the eigenvalue 0.
