Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let g\mathfrak{g} be a simple Lie algebra of dimension 3, and let Φ\Phi be its Killing form. Denote by o(Φ)\mathfrak{o}(\Phi ) the orthogonal algebra of Φ\Phi, i.e. the subalgebra of gl(g)\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{l}(\mathfrak{g}) consisting of the elements leaving Φ\Phi invariant.

a) Show that ad:g→o(Φ):\mathfrak{g}\rightarrow \mathfrak{o}(\Phi ) is an isomorphism.

b) Prove the equivalence of the following properties:

(i) g\mathfrak{g} contains a non-zero isotropic vector (for Φ\Phi ).

(ii) g\mathfrak{g} contains a non-zero nilpotent element.

(iii) g\mathfrak{g} is isomorphic to s\mathfrak{s}.

c) Show that there exists an extension k1k_1 of kk, of degree ≤2\leq 2, such that g(k1)=k1⊗kg\mathfrak{g}_{(k_1)}=k_1\otimes_k\mathfrak{g} is isomorphic to s(k1)\mathfrak{s}_{(k_1)}.

Math. Phys., Vol. 15 (1974), pp. 350-359. d) Give the vector space A=k⊕gA =k\oplus \mathfrak{g} the unique algebra structure admitting 1 as unit element, and such that the product g×g→A\mathfrak{g}\times \mathfrak{g}\rightarrow A is given by the formula

x.y=18Φ(x,y).1+12[x,y](x,y∈g) x.y=\frac{1}{8}\Phi (x, y).1 +\frac{1}{2}[x, y](x, y\in \mathfrak{g})

Show that A is a quaternion algebra over kk, and that g\mathfrak{g} is the Lie subalgebra of A consisting of the elements of trace zero (reduce, by extension of the base field, to the case where g=s\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{s}, and show that A can then be identified with the matrix algebra M2(k)\mathbf{M}_2(k)).

Conversely, if D is a quaternion algebra over kk, the elements of D of trace zero form a simple Lie algebra of dimension 3, and the corresponding algebra A can be identified with D.

e) Prove the formulas

Φ(x,x)=−\Phi (x, x) =-8NrdA(x),Φ(x,y)=_A(x),\Phi (x, y) = 4TrdA(xy)_A(xy)

2[x,[y,z]]=Φ(x,y)z−Φ(x,z)y(x,y,z∈g) 2[x,[y, z]] =\Phi (x, y)z-\Phi (x, z)y(x, y, z\in \mathfrak{g})

f) Show that the discriminant of Φ\Phi (with respect to any basis of g\mathfrak{g}) is of the form −2λ2-2\lambda^2, with λ∈k∗\lambda \in k^*.

g) Let nn be an integer ≥0\geq 0. Show that the g\mathfrak{g}-module Sn(g)\mathbf{S}^n(\mathfrak{g}) has a unique simple submodule of dimension 2n+12n+ 1, and that this module is absolutely simple (reduce to the case where g=s\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{s}, and use Exerc. 9).

Show that g\mathfrak{g} has an absolutely simple module of dimension 2n2n only if g\mathfrak{g} is isomorphic to s\mathfrak{s}, i.e. only if A is isomorphic to M2(k)\mathbf{M}_2(k). (Let V be such a module. If n≥2n\geq 2, show by means of Exerc. 6c6c) that the g\mathfrak{g}-module V⊗gV\otimes \mathfrak{g} has a unique absolutely simple submodule of dimension 2n−22n-2. Then reduce to the case n=1n= 1, which is trivial.)
