Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 226

Let k1k_1 be an extension of kk of finite degree n≥2n\geq 2.

a) Show that the semi-simple kk-algebra sl(2,k1)\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k_1) is not splittable.

b) Show that the splittable simple kk-algebra sl(n,k)\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(n, k) contains a Cartan subalgebra h1\mathfrak{h}_1 that is not splitting. (Choose an embedding of the algebra k1k_1 into Mn(k)\mathbf{M}_n(k), and take h1=k1∩sl(n,k).\mathfrak{h}_1=k_1\cap \mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(n, k).)
