Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 228

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let G be a connected finite dimensional real Lie group. Let g\mathfrak{g} be its Lie algebra, and let {x1,...,xn}\{x_1, . . . , x_n\} be a generating family of g\mathfrak{g}. For m≥0m\geq 0, denote by Γm\Gamma_m the subgroup of G generated by the exp(2−mxi^{-m}x_i),1≤i≤n, 1\leq i\leq n. We have Γ0⊂Γ1⊂⋯\Gamma_0\subset \Gamma_1\subset \cdots.

a) Show that the union of the Γm\Gamma_m is dense in G.

b) Let HmH_m be the identity component of the closure Γ‾m\overline{\Gamma}_m of Γm\Gamma_m. We have H0⊂H1⊂⋯H_0\subset H_1\subset \cdots, and the family (Hm)(H_m) is stationary; let H be the common value of the HmH_m for mm sufficiently large. Show that H is normal in G (observe that H is normalized by all the Γm\Gamma_m), and that the image of Γm\Gamma_m in G/HG/H is a discrete subgroup of G/HG/H. The union of these subgroups being dense in G/HG/H, deduce (cf. Chap. III, §6, Exerc. 23d23d))) that G/HG/H is nilpotent.

c) Assume that g=Dg\mathfrak{g}=\mathscr{D}\mathfrak{g}. Show that G = H, in other words, that Γm\Gamma_m is dense in G if mm is sufficiently large.
