Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 231

Retain the notations of Prop. 9.

a) Let α∈B\alpha \in B. Show that n∩\mathfrak{n}\cap Ker ad XαX_{\alpha} is the direct sum of the gβ\mathfrak{g}^{\beta}, where β\beta belongs to the set of elements of R+R_+ such that α+β∉R+\alpha +\beta \notin R_+.

b) Deduce that, if g\mathfrak{g} is simple, the centre of n\mathfrak{n} is equal to gα~\mathfrak{g}^{\widetilde{\alpha}}, where α~\widetilde{\alpha} is the highest root of R+R_+. In the general case, the dimension of the centre of n\mathfrak{n} is equal to the number of simple components of g\mathfrak{g}.
