Choose a basis of R, and hence a set of positive roots R+R_+. Assume that R is irreducible. Let α~\widetilde{\alpha} be the highest root, S the set of roots orthogonal to α~\widetilde{\alpha}, and S+=S∩R+S_+= S\cap R_+.

a) Let

g′=gS⊕hS,m+=∑α∈S+gα,m−=∑α∈S+g−α \mathfrak{g}'=\mathfrak{g}^S\oplus \mathfrak{h}_S,\mathfrak{m}_+=\sum_{\alpha\in S_+}\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha},\mathfrak{m}_-=\sum_{\alpha\in S_+}\mathfrak{g}^{-\alpha}

Then g′\mathfrak{g}' is semi-simple and g′=hS⊕m+⊕m−\mathfrak{g}'=\mathfrak{h}_S\oplus \mathfrak{m}_+\oplus \mathfrak{m}_-.

b) Put:

n+=∑gα,p=∑gα,p0=∑gα \mathfrak{n}_+=\sum\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha},\mathfrak{p}=\sum\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha},\mathfrak{p}_0=\sum\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha}
α∈R+α∈R+−S+α∈R+−S+−{α~}\alpha \in R_+\alpha \in R_+-S_+\alpha \in R_+-S_+-\{\widetilde{\alpha}\}

Then

n+=m+⊕p,[m+,p0]⊂p0,[n+,gα~]=0 \mathfrak{n}_+=\mathfrak{m}_+\oplus \mathfrak{p},[\mathfrak{m}_+,\mathfrak{p}_0]\subset \mathfrak{p}_0,[\mathfrak{n}_+,\mathfrak{g}^{\widetilde{\alpha}}] = 0

In particular, p\mathfrak{p} is an ideal of n+\mathfrak{n}_+.

c) For all α∈R+\alpha \in R_+ -- S+S_+ -- {α~}\{\widetilde{\alpha}\}, there exists a unique α′∈R+\alpha '\in R_+ -- S+S_+ -- {α~}\{\widetilde{\alpha}\} such that α+α′=α~\alpha +\alpha '= \widetilde{\alpha}. For all α∈R+\alpha \in R_+ -- S+S_+ -- {α~}\{\widetilde{\alpha}\}, a non-zero element XαX_{\alpha} of gα\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha} can be chosen so that

[Xα,Xα′]=±Xα~[X_{\alpha}, X_{\alpha'}] =\pm X_{\widetilde{\alpha}} if α∈R+−S+−{α~}\alpha \in R_+-S_+- \{\widetilde{\alpha}\}

[Xα,Xβ]=0[X_{\alpha}, X_{\beta}] = 0 if α,β∈R+−S+,β≠α′.11\alpha , \beta \in R_+-S_+, \beta \not=\alpha '.^{11}
