Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 245

Assume that k=Rk=\mathbf{R} or C\mathbf{C}. Let Γ\Gamma be a simply-connected Lie group with Lie algebra g\mathfrak{g}. Let λ,μ,E,F,G\lambda , \mu,E,F,G be as in Prop. 10. Let (e1,...,en)(e_1, . . . , e_n) (resp. (f1,...,fp)(f_1, . . . , f_p)) be a basis of E (resp. F) consisting of eigenvectors of h\mathfrak{h}, with e1∈Eλe_1\in E^{\lambda} and f1∈Fμf_1\in F^\mu. We can consider E,F,GE,F,G as Γ\Gamma -modules. If γ∈Γ\gamma \in \Gamma, denote by ai(γ)a_i(\gamma ) the coordinate of γ.e1\gamma .e_1 with index ii, and bj(γ)b_j(\gamma ) the coordinate of γ.f1\gamma .f_1 with index jj. Show that the function aibja_ib_j on Γ\Gamma is not identically zero. Deduce that, for all (i,j)(i, j), there exists an element of G⊂E⊗FG\subset E\otimes F whose coordinate of index (i,j)(i, j) is ≠0\not= 0; for k=Rk=\mathbf{R} or C\mathbf{C}, this gives a new proof of Prop. 10. Pass from this to the case k=Qk=\mathbf{Q}, and then to the case of an arbitrary field, cf. Exerc. 4.
