Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 253

Let a\mathfrak{a} be a semi-simple Lie algebra, l=l= rk(a\mathfrak{a}),I, I the algebra of invariant polynomial functions on a\mathfrak{a}, and P1,...,PlP_1, . . . ,P_l homogeneous elements of I generating I as an algebra. The PiP_i define a polynomial map P:a→klP :\mathfrak{a}\rightarrow k^l. If x∈ax\in \mathfrak{a}, denote by DxP:a→klD_xP :\mathfrak{a}\rightarrow k^l the tangent linear map of P at xx (Chap. VII, App. I, no. 2).

a) Let h\mathfrak{h} be a Cartan subalgebra of a\mathfrak{a}, and let x∈hx\in \mathfrak{h}. Prove the equivalence of:

(i) DxP∣hD_xP|\mathfrak{h} is an isomorphism from h\mathfrak{h} to klk^l;

(ii) xx is regular.

(Reduce to the split case. Choose a basis of h\mathfrak{h}, and denote by d(x)d(x) the determinant of the matrix of DxP∣hD_xP|\mathfrak{h} relative to this basis. Show, by means of Prop. 5 of Chap. V, §5, no. 4, that there exists c∈k∗c\in k^* such that d(x)2=c∏α∈Rα(x)d(x)^2=c\prod_{\alpha\in R}\alpha (x),

where α\alpha belongs to the set R of roots of (a,h).)(\mathfrak{a},\mathfrak{h}).)

If these conditions are satisfied, a=h⊕\mathfrak{a}=\mathfrak{h}\oplusIm ad(xx), and Ker DxP=D_xP = Im ad(xx) (use Exerc. 6 to show that DxPD_xP vanishes on Im ad(xx)).

b) Show that the set of x∈ax\in \mathfrak{a} such that DxPD_xP is of rank ll is a dense open subset of a\mathfrak{a} in the Zariski topology.
