Exercise 20, § 6

General Topology, I

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

A lattice XX is said to be a Boolean algebra if it is distributive, has a least element oo, and a greatest element ii and if, for each x∈Xx \in X, there is an element x′∈Xx' \in X such that inf⁡(x,x′)=o\inf (x, x') = o and sup⁡(x,x′)=i\sup (x, x') = i; such an element is said to be a complement of xx in XX.

a) Let x→Axx \to A_x be the injection of a Boolean algebra XX into the set of subsets of the set Ω\Omega of prime prefilters on XX, defined in Exercise 18 d). Show that if x′x' is a complement of xx in XX, then Ax′=CAxA_{x'} = \mathbf{C}A_x in Ω\Omega; deduce that an element xx has only one complement x′x', that the complement of x′x' is xx, and that the complement of inf⁡(x,y)\inf (x, y) is sup⁡(x′,y′)\sup (x', y'); give direct proofs of these statements. The ideals of the Boolean ring AA corresponding to XX, other than AA, are the coprefilters on XX.

b) Show that, in a Boolean algebra XX, every prime prefilter is maximal (remark that, for each x∈Xx \in X, every prime prefilter must contain either xx or its complement).

c) Conversely, let XX be a distributive lattice which has a least element oo and a greatest element ii, and is such that every prime prefilter on XX is maximal. Show that XX is a Boolean algebra. (For an element x∈Xx \in X, consider the coprefilter CC (Exercise 17) consisting of those y∈Xy \in X such that inf⁡(x,y)=o\inf (x, y) = o; if xx has no complement, there is a maximal coprefilter MM containing xx and CC; remark that the complement UU of MM in XX is a prime prefilter [Exercise 17 b) and 18 b)] and use Exercise 17 f)).

d) Show that if XX is a topological space then the set B\mathfrak{B} of subsets of XX which are both open and closed is a Boolean algebra if ordered by inclusion. If we take XX to be the topological space associated with the Fréchet filter (no. 5), show that the Boolean algebra B\mathfrak{B} thus obtained is countably infinite and therefore cannot be isomorphic to the ordered set P(A)\mathfrak{P}(A) of all subsets of a set AA.
