Exercise 1, § 1

General Topology, II, 206

Let XX be an infinite set and let F\mathfrak{F} be an ultrafilter on XX such that the sets of F\mathfrak{F} have empty intersection. For each A∈FA \in \mathfrak{F}, let VAV_A denote the subset Δ∪(A×A)\Delta \cup (A \times A) of X×XX \times X. Show that, as AA runs through F\mathfrak{F}, the sets VAV_A form a fundamental system of entourages for a uniformity U(F)\mathfrak{U}(\mathfrak{F}) on XX, and that the topology induced by this uniformity is discrete.
