Bourbaki

Exercise 5, § 1

General Topology, II, 206

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let XX be a uniform space, U\mathfrak{U} its uniformity; for each entourage VV of XX, let V~\tilde{V} be the subset of P(X)×P(X)\mathfrak{P}(X) \times \mathfrak{P}(X) consisting of all pairs (M,N)(M, N) of subsets of XX such that both M⊂V(N)M \subset V(N) and N⊂V(M)N \subset V(M). Show that the sets V~\tilde{V} form a fundamental system of entourages of a uniformity U~\tilde{\mathfrak{U}} on P(X)\mathfrak{P}(X).

b) On the set P0(X)\mathfrak{P}_0(X) of non-empty subsets of XX, show that the topology induced by the topology T(U~)\mathfrak{T}(\tilde{\mathfrak{U}}) induced by U~\tilde{\mathfrak{U}} is finer than the topology TΦ\mathfrak{T}_\Phi (Chapter I, § 2, Exercise 7).

c) If XX has at least two points and if U\mathfrak{U} is Hausdorff, show that the topology induced by T(U~)\mathfrak{T}(\tilde{\mathfrak{U}}) on P0(X)\mathfrak{P}_0(X) is never coarser than TΩ\mathfrak{T}_\Omega. The topology induced by T(U~)\mathfrak{T}(\tilde{\mathfrak{U}}) on the set F(X)\mathfrak{F}(X) of non-empty closed subsets of XX is finer than the topology induced by TΩ\mathfrak{T}_\Omega on this set if and only if, for each closed subset AA of XX, the sets V(A)V(A) form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of AA as VV runs through the set of entourages of XX.

d) Show that on the quotient set X/RX/R defined in Chapter I, § 11, Exercise 18, the quotient topology, and the topologies defined by TΩ,TΦ\mathfrak{T}_\Omega, \mathfrak{T}_\Phi and T(U~)\mathfrak{T}(\tilde{\mathfrak{U}}) (where U\mathfrak{U} is the usual uniformity on R2\mathbf{R}^2) are all four distinct.
