Exercise 1, § 3

General Topology, II, 208

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let U\mathfrak{U} denote the additive uniformity on the real line R\mathbf{R}, and let U′\mathfrak{U}' denote the inverse image of U\mathfrak{U} under the mapping x→x3x \to x^3 of R\mathbf{R} onto itself. Show that U′\mathfrak{U}' is strictly finer than U\mathfrak{U}, but that the Cauchy filters are the same for both uniformities.*
