Bourbaki

Exercise 4, § 2

General Topology, III, 299

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) In a semi-topological group GG, the intersection of the neighbourhoods of ee which are both open and closed is a closed subgroup HH which is invariant under all automorphisms of GG (remark that there can be no partition of GG into two open and closed subsets, each of which meets HH).

b) On the set G\mathfrak{G} of all subgroups of GG, define a mapping φ:G→G\varphi : \mathfrak{G} \to \mathfrak{G} as follows: if HH is any subgroup of GG, then φ(H)\varphi(H) is the subgroup of HH which is the intersection of all the simultaneously open and closed neighbourhoods of ee in HH. In the set G\mathfrak{G}, ordered by the relation ⊃\supset, consider the chain Γ\Gamma of GG with respect to the mapping φ\varphi (Set Theory, Chapter III, § 2, Exercise 6); show that the smallest subgroup of Γ\Gamma is the connected component of ee in GG (remark that this smallest subgroup must be connected).
