Bourbaki

Exercise 11, § 6

General Topology, III, 317

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) A topological ring with an identity element is said to be a Gelfand ring if A∗A^* is open in AA and if the topology induced on A∗A^* by the topology of AA is compatible with the multiplicative group structure of A∗A^*. Every Hausdorff topological division ring is a Gelfand ring [cf. Exercise 20 e)].

b) Show that if AA is a Gelfand ring then so is every matrix ring Mn(A)M_n(A) endowed with the product topology (on An2A^{n^2}). (Proof by induction on nn).
