Exercise 14, § 6

General Topology, III, 319

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let AA be a compact ring with an identity element, totally disconnected (*) and without radical. Then AA is isomorphic to the product of a family of finite simple rings. [Show first that AA has a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of oo which are two-sided ideals, using Exercise 12 b) of § 6 and Proposition 14 of § 4. Hence show that there is a maximal set Φ\Phi of two-sided ideals of AA such that (i) every two-sided ideal N∈Φ\mathfrak{N} \in \Phi is a maximal open two-sided ideal of AA; (ii) no ideal N∈Φ\mathfrak{N} \in \Phi contains a finite intersection of ideals of Φ\Phi other than N\mathfrak{N}. Show then that AA is isomorphic to the product of the rings A/NA/\mathfrak{N} as N\mathfrak{N} runs through Φ\Phi; prove first that the intersection of all the N∈Φ\mathfrak{N} \in \Phi consists only of the zero element of AA by using Exercise 9 b)].
