Exercise 19, § 6

General Topology, III, 319

a) Let KK be a division ring endowed with a Hausdorff topology T\mathfrak{T} compatible with the ring structure of KK. Show that there is a neighbourhood VV of oo in KK such that (CV)∪(CV)−1=K∗(CV) \cup (CV)^{-1} = K^* [this is equivalent to V∩(V∩K∗)−1=∅V \cap (V \cap K^*)^{-1} = \varnothing].

b) Suppose moreover that T\mathfrak{T} is not discrete. Show that if UU is any neighbourhood of oo in KK and if U∗U^* denotes U∩K∗U \cap K^*, then

U∗(U∗)−1=K∗. U^*(U^*)^{-1} = K^*.

(*) It can be shown that a compact ring with an identity element is necessarily totally disconnected.
