General Topology, III, 315

a) Let aa be a discrete left ideal in a topological ring AA. Show that, for every x∈ax \in a, the left annihilator of xx in AA is open. Hence show that if AA is a non-discrete ring with no zero-divisors, it contains no discrete (left or right) ideal other than {0}\{0\}. b) Let AA be a locally connected topological ring, and let aa be a totally disconnected left ideal of AA. Show that, for each x∈ax \in a, the left annihilator of xx in AA is open. Hence show that if AA has no zero-divisors it contains no totally disconnected (left or right) ideal other than {0}\{0\}.
