Exercise 24, § 6

General Topology, III, 323

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Show that every subgroup of the multiplicative group Qp∗\mathbf{Q}_p^* of the pp-adic field Qp\mathbf{Q}_p is isomorphic to the product of a subgroup of the multiplicative group UU of units of Zp\mathbf{Z}_p and a discrete additive subgroup isomorphic to Z\mathbf{Z} or {0}\{0\}.

b) Show that the compact subgroups of the subgroup V=1+pV = 1 + \mathfrak{p} of UU are the groups 1+pn1 + \mathfrak{p}^n [same reasoning as in Exercise 23 c)].

c) Show that, for each a∈Ua \in U, the sequence (apn)n∈N(a^{p^n})_{n \in \mathbf{N}} tends to a limit α≡a(modp)\alpha \equiv a \pmod{\mathfrak{p}} and that αp=α\alpha^p = \alpha [show that apn≡apn−1(modpn)a^{p^n} \equiv a^{p^{n-1}} \pmod{\mathfrak{p}^n} by induction on nn]. Show that all the roots of the polynomial Xp−1−1X^{p-1} - 1 (in an algebraically closed extension of Qp\mathbf{Q}_p) belong to Qp\mathbf{Q}_p and are pairwise incongruent mod p\mathfrak{p} [apply what precedes to the roots of the congruence xp−1−1≡0(modp)x^{p-1} - 1 \equiv 0 \pmod{p}]. If p>2p > 2 and if dd is the highest common factor of nn and p−1p - 1, the polynomial Xn−1X^n - 1 has exactly dd roots in Qp\mathbf{Q}_p, which are roots of Xd−1X^d - 1 (same method : take aa to be a root of Xn−1X^n - 1).

Hence show that, if p>2p > 2, every compact subgroup of the multiplicative group Qp∗\mathbf{Q}_p^* is the direct product of a finite subgroup of UU [consisting of the (p−1)(p-1)th roots of unity] and a subgroup of the form 1+pn1 + \mathfrak{p}^n [use b)]. How are these results to be modified for p=2p = 2? (Make the group 1+p21 + \mathfrak{p}^2 play the part previously played by 1+p1 + \mathfrak{p}).
