Exercise 25, § 6

General Topology, III, 323

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let a≠0a \neq 0 be a pp-adic number. Then the mapping n→ann \to a^n is continuous on Z\mathbf{Z} (as a subspace of Qp\mathbf{Q}_p) if and only if a∈1+pa \in 1 + \mathfrak{p}. If this condition is satisfied, show that n→ann \to a^n is uniformly continuous on Z\mathbf{Z} and extends to a continuous homomorphism of Zp\mathbf{Z}_p into UU, denoted by x→axx \to a^x, which is injective if a≠1a \neq 1. If p>2p > 2 and if mm is the largest integer such that a∈1+pma \in 1 + \mathfrak{p}^m, then x→axx \to a^x is an isomorphism of Zp\mathbf{Z}_p onto 1+pm1 + \mathfrak{p}^m. How must this statement be modified when p=2p = 2?

b) Show that every continuous homomorphism of Zp\mathbf{Z}_p into UU is of the form x→axx \to a^x for some a∈1+pa \in 1 + \mathfrak{p} [if ff is such a homomorphism and f(1)=af(1) = a, then f(n)=anf(n) = a^n for n∈Zn \in \mathbf{Z}].

c) Show that the mapping (x,y)→xy(x, y) \to x^y is continuous on (1+p)×Zp(1 + \mathfrak{p}) \times \mathbf{Z}_p. If p>2p > 2 and b∈Zpb \in \mathbf{Z}_p, and if mm is the largest integer such that b∈pmb \in \mathfrak{p}^m, then the mapping x→xbx \to x^b is an isomorphism of the multiplicative group 1+p1 + \mathfrak{p} onto the multiplicative subgroup 1+pm+11 + \mathfrak{p}^{m+1} [use Exercise 24 b)]. How must this statement be modified when p=2p = 2?

d) If nn is an integer prime to both p−1p - 1 and pp, show that the mapping x=xnx = x^n is an automorphism of the multiplicative group UU [use Exercise 24 c)].
