a) An element xx (resp. an ideal aa) of a topological ring AA is said to be topologically nilpotent if the sequence (xn)n≥1(x^n)_{n \geq 1} converges to 00 [resp. if the filter base formed by the ana^n (n≥1n \geq 1) converges to 00]. Every element of a topologically nilpotent ideal is topologically nilpotent.

b) Suppose that AA has an identity element and that A∗A^* is open in AA. Show that if xx is any topologically nilpotent element of AA, then 1−x1 - x is a unit (observe that 1−xn1 - x^n is a unit for sufficiently large nn). Hence show that if all the elements of a (left or right) ideal aa are topologically nilpotent, then aa is contained in the radical of AA.

c) Suppose that AA is complete and has an identity element, and that there exists a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 00 which are subgroups of the additive group of AA. Show that if xx is topologically nilpotent, then 1−x1 - x is a unit in AA.

d) Under the hypotheses of c), show that if y∈Ay \in A is topologically nilpotent, then the equation x2+x=yx^2 + x = y has a root x∈Ax \in A, and that xx is topologically nilpotent.
