Exercise 2, § 5

General Topology, IV, 390

a) Let ff be a real-valued function defined on a set XX, let AA be a non-empty subset of XX, and let φ\varphi be an increasing real-valued function defined on f(A)f(A). If φ\varphi is continuous at the point a=sup⁡x∈Af(x)a = \sup_{x \in A} f(x), then sup⁡x∈Aφ(f(x))=φ(sup⁡x∈Af(x))\sup_{x \in A} \varphi(f(x)) = \varphi(\sup_{x \in A} f(x)).

b) Let ff be a real-valued function defined on a set XX filtered by a filter F\mathfrak{F}, and let φ\varphi be a real-valued function defined on an open neighbourhood VV of the set of cluster points of ff with respect to F\mathfrak{F}. Show that if φ\varphi is increasing and continuous on VV, then

lim⁡sup⁡F(φ∘f)=φ(lim⁡sup⁡Ff). \lim \sup_{\mathfrak{F}} (\varphi \circ f) = \varphi(\lim \sup_{\mathfrak{F}} f).
