Exercise 12, § 6

General Topology, IV, 396

Let ff be a continuous non-constant finite real-valued function on a compact interval [a,b][a, b] of R\mathbf{R}, such that f(a)=f(b)=0f(a) = f(b) = 0; let ZZ be the closed subset of [a,b][a, b] consisting of points xx for which f(x)=0f(x) = 0, and let cc be the largest of the lengths of the intervals contiguous to ZZ in [a,b][a, b]. Show that, for each tt such that 0<t<c0 < t < c, there is a point x∈[a,b]x \in [a, b] such that x+t∈[a,b]x + t \in [a, b] and f(x+t)=f(x)f(x + t) = f(x).
