Exercise 13, § 6

General Topology, IV, 397

Let ff be a continuous finite real-valued function on a compact interval [a,b][a, b] of R\mathbf{R}, and suppose that ff is not strictly monotone. Show that there exists a point x0∈]a,b[x_0 \in ]a, b[ such that, for each ε>0\varepsilon > 0, there are two points y,zy, z in [a,b][a, b] such that x0−ε<y<x0<z<x0+εx_0 - \varepsilon < y < x_0 < z < x_0 + \varepsilon and f(y)=f(z)f(y) = f(z).
