Exercise 14, § 6

General Topology, IV, 397

Let ff be a continuous mapping of R\mathbf{R} into itself. a) Show that if ff is uniformly continuous on R\mathbf{R}, then there exist two real numbers α≥0\alpha \geq 0 and β≥0\beta \geq 0 such that ∣f(x)∣≤α∣x∣+β|f(x)| \leq \alpha|x| + \beta for all x∈Rx \in \mathbf{R}. b) Show that if ff is monotone and bounded in R\mathbf{R}, then ff is uniformly continuous on R\mathbf{R}.
