Bourbaki

Exercise 15, § 6

General Topology, IV, 397

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be the Alexandroff half-line [§ 2, Exercise 12 b)], and let X′X' be its compactification by adjunction of a point at infinity ω\omega. Show that, for every continuous mapping f:X→Xf : X \to X, either we have lim⁡x→ω,x∈Xf(x)=ω\lim_{x \to \omega, x \in X} f(x) = \omega, or else there exists z∈Xz \in X such that ff is constant in the interval [z,→[[z, \to[. [Show that if, as xx tends to ω\omega, ff has a cluster point c∈Xc \in X, then we must have lim⁡x→ω,x∈X=c\lim_{x \to \omega, x \in X} = c; prove that ff can have no other cluster point in X′X', by using the fact that every increasing sequence converges in XX. Then use Exercise 12 b) of § 2 and the fact that in X′X' every countable intersection of neighbourhoods of ω\omega is a neighbourhood of ω\omega].
