Exercise 2, § 6

General Topology, IV, 393

Let BB be a base of R\mathbf{R} considered as a vector space over the field Q\mathbf{Q} ("Hamel base"). BB is uncountable (§2§ 2, Exercise 2). Let φ\varphi be a bijection of a subset C≠BC \neq B of BB onto the set BB. Define a mapping ff of R\mathbf{R} into R\mathbf{R} as follows: if x=∑ξ∈Bλ(ξ)ξx = \sum_{\xi \in B} \lambda(\xi) \xi, where λ(ξ)∈Q\lambda(\xi) \in \mathbf{Q} and λ(ξ)=0\lambda(\xi) = 0 for all but a finite number of elements ξ∈B\xi \in B, then f(x)=∑ξ∈Cλ(ξ)φ(ξ)f(x) = \sum_{\xi \in C} \lambda(\xi) \varphi(\xi). Show that f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y)f(x + y) = f(x) + f(y), but that, for each z∈Rz \in \mathbf{R}, f−1(z)f^{-1}(z) is a dense subset of R\mathbf{R}, which implies that ff is not bounded above nor below in any interval of R\mathbf{R}.
