Exercise 8, § 6

General Topology, IV, 396

Let XX be a topological space, and let AA be a closed subset of X×R‾X \times \overline{\mathbf{R}}. Show that the mapping x→inf⁡(A(x))x \to \inf (A(x)) of pr1A\mathrm{pr}_1 A into R‾\overline{\mathbf{R}} is lower semi-continuous. Conversely, if f:X→R‾f : X \to \overline{\mathbf{R}} is a lower semi-continuous function, then the subset BB of X×R‾X \times \overline{\mathbf{R}} consisting of pairs (x,y)(x, y) such that y⩾f(x)y \geqslant f(x) is closed in X×R‾X \times \overline{\mathbf{R}}.
