Exercise 11, § 7

General Topology, IV, 398

Consider a sequence (an)(a_n) every term of which is the sum of a finite sequence of finite real numbers

an=bn,1+bn,2+⋯+bn,kn. a_n = b_{n,1} + b_{n,2} + \cdots + b_{n,k_n}.

For each pair (n,p)(n, p) of positive integers such that p≤knp \leq k_n, if m=∑i=0n−1ki+pm = \sum_{i=0}^{n-1} k_i + p, put cm=bn,pc_m = b_{n,p}. Show that if the series whose general term is ana_n is convergent in R\mathbf{R}, and if

dn=∣bn,1∣+∣bn,2∣+⋯+∣bn,kn∣ d_n = |b_{n,1}| + |b_{n,2}| + \cdots + |b_{n,k_n}|
tends to 0 as nn tends to infinity, then the series whose general term is cmc_m is convergent and has the same sum as the series whose general term is ana_n.
