Exercise 15, § 7

General Topology, IV, 400

Let (un)(u_n) be a sequence of finite real numbers such that lim⁡n→∞un=0\lim_{n \to \infty} u_n = 0 and ∑nun+=∑nun−=+∞\sum_n u_n^+ = \sum_n u_n^- = +\infty. If aa and bb are any two real numbers (finite or not) such that a≤ba \leq b, show that there is a permutation σ\sigma of N\mathbf{N} such that, if we put sn=∑k=0nuσ(k)s_n = \sum_{k=0}^n u_{\sigma(k)}, we have lim inf⁡n→∞sn=a\liminf_{n \to \infty} s_n = a and lim sup⁡n→∞sn=b\limsup_{n \to \infty} s_n = b. Show that the set of cluster points of the sequence (sn)(s_n) is then the interval [a,b][a, b].
