Exercise 19, § 7

General Topology, IV, 401

Let (1+ui)i∈I(1 + u_i)_{i \in I} be a multipliable family in R\mathbf{R}. For each non-empty subset HH of II, let vHv_H denote ∏i∈Hui\prod_{i \in H} u_i. Show that the family (vH)H∈P(I)(v_H)_{H \in \mathfrak{P}(I)} is summable in R\mathbf{R} and that

1+∑HvH=∏i∈I(1+ui). 1 + \sum_H v_H = \prod_{i \in I} (1 + u_i).
Is the converse true?

Deduce that, if −1<x<1-1 < x < 1, then ∏n=0∞(1+x2n)=1/(1−x)\prod_{n=0}^\infty (1 + x^{2^n}) = 1/(1 - x).
