Bourbaki

Exercise 10, § 8

General Topology, IV

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let (dn)(d_n) be a base sequence, let an=dn/dn−1a_n = d_n / d_{n-1} (n≥1n \geq 1), let (ni)(n_i) be a strictly increasing sequence of integers, and let (bi)(b_i) be a sequence of integers such that 0<bi<ani−10 < b_i < a_{n_i} - 1 for each ii. Let GG be the set of all x∈[0,1]x \in [0, 1] such that, if ∑n=1∞un/dn\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} u_n / d_n is the expansion of xx, or the improper expansion if it exists, then uni≠biu_{n_i} \neq b_i for all i∈Ni \in \mathbf{N}. Show that GG is a totally disconnected perfect set, and that if ll is the sum of the lengths of the intervals contiguous to GG and contained in [0,1][0, 1], then

1−l=∏i=0∞(1−1ani). 1 - l = \prod_{i=0}^{\infty} \left( 1 - \frac{1}{a_{n_i}} \right).
