Exercise 16, § 8

General Topology, IV

a) Let AA be a countable closed subset of R\mathbf{R} and let ff be a continuous real-valued function defined on R\mathbf{R}. Show that if ff is constant in each of the intervals contiguous to AA, then ff is constant (use Bolzano's theorem).

b) If ff is the continuous mapping of Cantor's triadic set KK onto [0,1][0, 1] defined in Exercise 9, show that ff can be extended to a continuous function on R\mathbf{R} which is constant on each of the intervals contiguous to KK.
