Exercise 2, § 8

General Topology, IV

Let (εn)(\varepsilon_n) be a strictly decreasing sequence of finite numbers > 0 which tend to 0. For each x∈Rx \in \mathbf{R}, let rn(x)r_n(x) be the multiple of εn\varepsilon_n which is the approximation by defect to xx to within εn\varepsilon_n. Then the sequence (rn(x))(r_n(x)) is increasing for all x∈Rx \in \mathbf{R} if and only if εn\varepsilon_n is an integer multiple of εn+1\varepsilon_{n+1} for each nn.
