Bourbaki

Exercise 5, § 8

General Topology, IV

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

For each real number x∈]0,1]x \in ]0, 1], there is a unique infinite increasing sequence (qn)(q_n) of integers > 0 such that x=∑n=1∞1/(q1q2⋯qn)x = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} 1/(q_1 q_2 \cdots q_n). The number xx is rational if and only if qn+1=qnq_{n+1} = q_n from a certain value of nn onwards.
