Exercise 9, § 8

General Topology, IV

Show that Cantor's triadic set KK (§ 2, no. 5) is the set of all real numbers x∈[0,1]x \in [0, 1] whose triadic expansion (resp. improper triadic expansion if xx is the origin of an interval contiguous to KK)

x=∑n=1∞un3−n x = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} u_n 3^{-n}

is such that un≠1u_n \neq 1 for each nn (so that un=0u_n = 0 or un=2u_n = 2). If vn=12unv_n = \frac{1}{2} u_n for each nn, and if f(x)=∑n=1∞vn2−nf(x) = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} v_n 2^{-n}, show that ff is a surjective continuous mapping of KK onto [0,1][0, 1]; deduce that KK has the power of the continuum.
