Exercise 10, § 1

General Topology, IX

Let XX be a completely regular space, let KK be a compact subset of XX, and let VV be a neighbourhood of KK in XX.

a) Show that there is a continuous mapping of XX into [0,1][0, 1] which is equal to 1 on KK and equal to 0 on CV\mathbf{C}V [use (OIV), covering KK by a finite number of suitably chosen neighbourhoods].

b) Let X′X' be the quotient space of XX obtained by identifying all the points of KK. Show that X′X' is completely regular.
