Bourbaki

Exercise 11, § 1

General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a completely regular space. Two closed sets A,BA, B in XX are said to be completely separated if there exists a continuous mapping ff of XX into [0,1][0, 1] such that f(x)=0f(x) = 0 on AA and f(x)=1f(x) = 1 on BB.

a) Let βX\beta X be the Stone-Čech compactification of XX. Show that two closed sets AA and BB in XX are completely separated if and only if their closures in βX\beta X do not intersect [use Exercises 7 a) and 10 a)].

b) Let hh be a homeomorphism of XX onto a dense subset X′X' of a compact space KK, and let h‾\overline{h} be the continuous mapping βX→K\beta X \to K which extends hh. Suppose that, for each pair of completely separated closed subsets A,BA, B of XX, the closures of h(A)h(A) and h(B)h(B) in KK do not intersect. Show that h‾\overline{h} is a homeomorphism of βX\beta X onto KK. (Show that h‾\overline{h} is injective: if a,ba, b are distinct points of βX\beta X such that h‾(a)=h‾(b)\overline{h}(a) = \overline{h}(b), consider a continuous mapping f:βX→[0,1]f : \beta X \to [0, 1] such that f(a)=0,f(b)=1f(a) = 0, f(b) = 1, and consider the sets X∩f‾−1[0,1/3]X \cap \overline{f}^{-1}[0, 1/3] and X∩f‾−1[2/3,1]X \cap \overline{f}^{-1}[2/3, 1].)
