Exercise 16, § 1

General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a complete Hausdorff uniform space, and let U\mathscr{U} be the uniformity of XX.

a) Let AA be a subset of XX which is the union of a sequence (Fn)(F_n) of closed sets, and let x∉Ax \notin A. Show that there is a continuous finite real-valued function f≥0f \geq 0 on XX, such that f(x)=0f(x) = 0 and f(y)>0f(y) > 0 for all y∈Ay \in A. (If gng_n is a continuous mapping of XX into [0,1][0, 1] such that gn(x)=0g_n(x) = 0 and gn(y)=1g_n(y) = 1 for all y∈Fny \in F_n, consider the function

f(x)=∑n=0∞gn(x)/2n. f(x) = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} g_n(x)/2^n.

b) Let h≥0h \geq 0 be a continuous real-valued function on XX, and let VV be the open set h‾([0,+∞[)\overline{h}([0, +\infty[). Let U′\mathscr{U}' be the uniformity on VV which is the least upper bound of the uniformity induced by U\mathscr{U} and the uniformity defined by the pseudometric

r(x,y)=∣1h(x)−1h(y)∣. r(x, y) = \left| \frac{1}{h(x)} - \frac{1}{h(y)} \right|.

Show that VV is complete with respect to U′\mathscr{U}'.

c) Let BB be a subset of XX which is the intersection of a family of sets (Aλ)(A_\lambda), each of which is the union of a countable family of closed sets. Show that there exists a uniformity on BB which is compatible with the topology induced on BB by the topology of XX, and such that BB is complete with respect to this uniformity [use b)].
