Exercise 2, § 1

General Topology, IX

Let ff be a mapping of X∖XX \setminus X into [0,+∞][0, +\infty]. Then the family of sets {f(x,x′)>s}\{f(x, x') > s\}, where ss runs through the set of all real numbers >0> 0, forms a fundamental system of entourages of a uniformity on XX if and only if ff satisfies the following conditions: i) f(x,x)=0f(x, x) = 0 for all x∈Xx \in X; ii) for each s>0s > 0 there exists t>0t > 0 such that the relation f(x,x′)≤tf(x, x') \leq t implies f(x,x′)≤s;f(x, x') \leq s; iii) for each s>0s > 0 there exists c>0c > 0 such that the relations f(x,z)≤cf(x, z) \leq c and f(z,y)≤cf(z, y) \leq c imply f(x,y)≤af(x, y) \leq a.

The conditions ii) and iii) are satisfied in particular if there exists a mapping φ\varphi of I=[0,+∞]I = [0, +\infty] onto itself which is continuous and zero at the point 0, and a mapping ψ\psi of I∖II \setminus I into II which is continuous and zero at the point (0,0)(0, 0), such that we have identically

f(y,x)≤φ(f(x,y))andf(x,y)≤ψ(f(x,z),f(z,y)). f(y, x) \leq \varphi(f(x, y)) \quad \text{and} \quad f(x, y) \leq \psi(f(x, z), f(z, y)).
