Exercise 20, § 1

General Topology, IX

a) Let XX be a completely regular space, and let aa be a point of XX. Then there exists a continuous function f≥0f \geq 0 on XX such that f(a)=0f(a) = 0 and f(x)>0f(x) > 0 whenever x≠ax \neq a, if and only if there is a sequence (Vn)(V_n) of neighbourhoods of aa in XX such that ⋂nVn={a}\bigcap_n V_n = \{a\} [cf. Exercise 16 a)].

b) Let XX be a completely regular space, each point of which has a countable fundamental system of neighbourhoods. Show that, in the Stone-Čech compactification βX\beta X, the set XX is equal to the set of points which have a countable fundamental system of neighbourhoods in βX\beta X [use a) and Exercise 12]. Let X′X' be another completely regular space, each point of which has a countable fundamental system of neighbourhoods. Show that if the Stone-Čech compactifications βX\beta X and βX′\beta X' are homeomorphic, then XX and X′X' are homeomorphic.
