a) Let be a topological space. Show that the following two properties are equivalent: every finite continuous real-valued function on is bounded; ) every bounded continuous real-valued function on attains its bounds. is said to be pseudo-compact if it has these properties. If is pseudo-compact and if is any continuous mapping of into a topological space , then is pseudo-compact.
b) Consider the following two properties of a topological space : if is any countable open covering of , then is the union of a finite number of the closures ; every countable filter base on which is formed of open sets has at least one cluster point. Show that and are equivalent and that they imply that is pseudo-compact. In particular, every absolutely closed topological space (Chapter I, § 9, Exercise 19) is pseudo-compact. If has properties and , then so does every subspace of which is the closure of an open set of [cf. § 4, Exercise 26 b)].
c) Consider the following property of a topological space : every locally finite open covering of is finite. Show that . [If is an increasing sequence of open subsets of which cover and are such that , consider the covering formed by the sets and the complement of a sequence such that
If is regular, show that . [Let be an infinite, locally finite, open covering of . Define by induction a sequence of indices, a sequence of points of , and for each two open neighbourhoods and of such that: (i) we have , , and meets only a finite number of sets ; (ii) meets none of the with indices . Now consider the covering formed by the and the complement of the union of the .]
d) In a completely regular space the properties and are all equivalent, and are equivalent to the following property: is precompact in any uniformity compatible with its topology. [To show that , note that if is a countably infinite, locally finite, open covering of and if , then there is a continuous real-valued function on such that for each [use (O_{IV})]. To show that , use Exercise 5 and observe that in a precompact space every uniformly continuous real-valued function is bounded. To show that , note that if is not precompact with respect to a uniformity , then there is a symmetric entourage of and a sequence of points of such that no two of the sets intersect.]
e) If is a completely regular pseudo-compact space which is complete with respect to some uniformity compatible with its topology, then is compact.
f) On a completely regular pseudo-compact space , the universal uniformity (Exercise 5) is induced by the uniformity of the Stone-Čech compactification of , and is the unique uniformity, compatible with the topology of , for which all the continuous mappings of into are uniformly continuous.
