Exercise 22, § 1

General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a Hausdorff uniform space, let YY be a closed subset of XX, and let ff be a bounded, uniformly continuous, real-valued function on YY. Show that ff has an extension f‾\overline{f} to XX which is bounded and uniformly continuous on XX. [We may assume that f(Y)⊂[0,1]f(Y) \subset [0, 1]. For each dyadic number r=k/2n∈[0,1]r = k/2^n \in [0, 1], let A(r)A(r) be the set of all x∈Yx \in Y such that f(x)≤rf(x) \leq r, and let B(r)=A(r)∪(X−Y)B(r) = A(r) \cup (X - Y). Define by induction \* (as in the proof of Theorem 1 of § 4, no. 1) \* an open set U(r)U(r) for each dyadic number r∈[0,1]r \in [0, 1] such that, whenever rr and r′r' are two dyadic numbers and r<r′r < r', there is an entourage VV of the uniformity for XX for which

V(A(r))⊂U(r′),V(U(r))⊂U(r′),V(U(r))⊂B(r′). V(A(r)) \subset U(r'), \quad V(U(r)) \subset U(r'), \quad V(U(r)) \subset B(r').

Then define f‾(x)\overline{f}(x) to be the greatest lower bound of the dyadic numbers rr such that x∈U(r)x \in U(r).]
