Bourbaki

Exercise 6, § 1

General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let XX be a completely regular space and let U\mathscr{U} be a uniformity compatible with the topology of XX. Let U∗\mathscr{U}^* be the coarsest uniformity on XX which makes uniformly continuous all the mappings of XX into [0,1][0, 1] which are uniformly continuous with respect to U\mathscr{U}. Show that the uniformity U∗\mathscr{U}^* is Hausdorff and compatible with the topology of XX, and that XX is precompact with respect to U∗\mathscr{U}^*.

b) Let KK be a compact space. Show that every mapping f:X→Kf : X \to K which is uniformly continuous with respect to U\mathscr{U} is also uniformly continuous with respect to U∗\mathscr{U}^* (note that the unique uniformity on KK is the coarsest for which all the continuous mappings of KK into the interval [0,1][0, 1] are uniformly continuous). Hence show that U∗\mathscr{U}^* is the finest of the uniformities on XX which are coarser than U\mathscr{U} and with respect to which XX is precompact.
