Bourbaki

Exercise 7, § 1

General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a completely regular space. If U0\mathscr{U}_0 denotes the universal uniformity on XX (Exercise 5), then U0∗\mathscr{U}_0^* (Exercise 6) is the coarsest uniformity on XX for which all continuous mappings of XX into [0,1][0, 1] are uniformly continuous. Let βX\beta X denote the compact space obtained by completing XX with respect to the uniformity U0∗U_0^*. βX\beta X is called the Stone-Čech compactification of XX.

a) Show that every continuous mapping of XX into a compact space KK can be extended to a continuous mapping of βX\beta X into KK (cf. Set Theory, Chapter IV, § 3).

b) Let ff be a homeomorphism of XX onto a dense subset X′X' of a compact space KK, and let fˉ\bar{f} be the continuous mapping βX→K\beta X \to K which extends ff. Show that fˉ(βX−X)=K−X′\bar{f}(\beta X - X) = K - X'. [Suppose that there is a point a∈βX−Xa \in \beta X - X such that fˉ(a)=f(b)\bar{f}(a) = f(b), where b∈Xb \in X; consider a continuous mapping g:βX→[0,1]g : \beta X \to [0, 1] such that g(a)=1g(a) = 1 and g(b)=0g(b) = 0, and let PP denote the set of all x∈βXx \in \beta X such that g(x)≥1/2g(x) \geq 1/2. There is a continuous mapping h:K→[0,1]h : K \to [0, 1] such that h(f(b))=0h(f(b)) = 0 and h(f(x))=1h(f(x)) = 1 for all x∈Px \in P; show that the relation h(f(a))=0h(f(a)) = 0 contradicts the fact that aa is in the closure of PP in βX\beta X.]
