Exercise 8, § 1
General Topology, IX
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be a completely regular space and let be its Stone-Čech compactification.
a) A filter on is said to be completely regular if has a base consisting of open sets such that for each set there exists a set contained in , and a continuous mapping which is equal to 0 on and 1 on . A completely regular filter is said to be maximal if there exists no strictly finer completely regular filter. Show that, if is any completely regular filter on , there is a maximal completely regular filter finer than (use Zorn’s lemma).
b) A completely regular filter is maximal if and only if, for each pair of open sets of such that and such that there is a continuous mapping of into which is equal to 0 on and equal to 1 on , we have either , or else there is a set of which does not meet (if all the sets of meet , consider the filter generated by the sets of and the sets where ).
c) Show that every maximal completely regular filter is a Cauchy filter on with respect to the uniformity induced by that of [show that each continuous mapping has a limit with respect to , by arguing by reductio ad absurdum and using b)].
d) Two distinct maximal completely regular filters cannot converge to the same point of [observe that by b) there exists an open set and an open set such that ; then argue by contradiction, using axiom ].
e) The trace on of the neighbourhood filter of any point is a maximal completely regular filter (argue by contradiction, using the definitions of a completely regular filter and of the neighbourhood filter of a point in .
