Exercise 10, § 2

General Topology, IX

Let XX be a compact space. If there exists a continuous real-valued function ff on X×XX \times X such that the relation f(x,y)=cf(x, y) = c is equivalent to x=yx = y, then XX is metrizable. (Show that if VV runs through a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of oo in R\mathbf{R}, the sets f−1(V)f^{-1}(V) form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of the diagonal Δ\Delta in X×XX \times X.)
