Exercise 16, § 2

General Topology, IX

Let XX and YY be two countably compact spaces. Show that the product X×YX \times Y is countably compact in each of the following two cases: (i) one of X,YX, Y is compact; (ii) one of X,YX, Y is such that each point has a countable fundamental system of neighbourhoods. [In case (i), supposing that YY is compact, consider an increasing sequence (Gn)(G_n) of open sets whose union is X×YX \times Y; for each nn, let HnH_n be the set of all x∈Xx \in X such that {x}×Y⊂Gn\{ x \} \times Y \subset G_n; show that HnH_n is open and that X=⋃nHnX = \bigcup_n H_n.]
